ESQUEMA NOVO - DJ TAHIRA

ESQUEMA NOVO - DJ TAHIRA

On his first visit to Brazil Música Macondo’s Tim Garcia had the pleasure of sitting down with esteemed DJ and producer Tahira in his native São Paulo.

Tahira is a DJ who has been championing the Afro-brazilian roots of the countries music through his eclectic genre bending sets for many years and was one of the pioneers responsible for bringing the Afrobeat sound to Brazil (a country that now has many Afrobeat collectives).

They discussed his formative years as a DJ, his shift from Hip Hop and Acid Jazz to House and eventually rediscovering his roots through the most unlikely means.

Tahira describes the struggle he and his peers had introducing ‘the other side’ of Brazilian music to Dancefloors. They also spoke about the reaction to his seminal edit of Gilberto Gil’s ‘Toda Menina Baiana’, (something that we will all hopefully be able to purchase on wax soon…), the influence artists like Jackson Do Pandeiro and Quantic have had on his musical outlook, his recent release on the new label Tiff’s Joints and his future plans.

The interview is interspersed music and followed by an exclusive guest mix from the man himself, we hope you enjoy it!
